WRDL back on the air

Ashland University’s radio station 88.9 FM-WRDL will feature a variety of student run shows on air for the first time this school year.

Beginning this month, WRDL will have at least one student on air nearly every day. Each student’s show is scheduled for the same time each week for a two-hour window. Currently, the most popular time slot is from 4-6 p.m.

While on air, DJs can put their personality into the show. In addition to reading promotions and telling the weather forecast, they can also share their own insights, ideas and stories with listeners.

WRDL will heighten their focus on the social media aspect of the station this semester as well. For example, DJs might tweet and post stories or links on the WRDL Facebook page. This helps them better connect with the audience and improves interaction with listeners.

Additionally, the station is planning on broadcasting a sports talk show for the first time this year. It is scheduled every other weekend at noon starting February 17 and 18.

Besides these new programs, WRDL is striving to increase the professionalism of shows. They are also aiming for consistency between the programs so that they all create a coherent image for WRDL.

All people, regardless of their major, can help out with WRDL and interested individuals should contact the station.

WRDL faculty adviser Steve Suess emphasized the benefits of gaining real-world experience at the radio station and broadcasting on the radio.

“Having a show will not only help you be better at radio but other areas as well,” Suess said. “It will make you a better writer and will help with vocal performance.”

They can also familiarize themselves with the various aspects of the industry.

“You are working on basic reporting and interviewing skills,” Suess said.

Overall, this valuable experience will help prepare students for a future career once they graduate from college.

“Having a show will open up doors for them,” Suess said.
