On Jan. 30, the Center for the Arts building experienced a water line issue that affected the whole buildings’ water pressure.
The city had a water line break, which caused there to be a water issue in CFA that was fixed the same day.
Vice President of Operations and Planning Patrick Ewing said, “Fortunately for us, it only affected the one building. If you’re in that one building, you’re effected but, but where the brakes take place, we could have severalbreaks go down.”
The CFA building has been under construction since the fall semester, with a new elevator. This one will be fully passenger friendly.
The vendor said it would be about two weeks before the elevator would be running after having a situation where they had to make structural modifications.
“They’re just about done; they need to finish up some block work, and we need to get the elevator inspected, and then once it’s inspected and improved, we can turn it back on,” said Ewing.

The elevator will be stainless steel and will no longer have the artwork on the inside of it like the last elevator.
The CFA building has also been heating up as the weather gets colder because of the age of the building. There is nothing facilities can do to turn down the heat.
“When the temperature is very cold outside and there are parts of the building that are cold, it’s trying to keep them warm, and in doing so, it’s sending heat into the entire building. A newer building has zones and systems where you can kind of control based on what’s going on,” said Ewing.
In areas that are too uncomfortable for students, facilities have started putting fans in certain areas to try to help with the heat.
The CFA building has slowly started to get more improvement done over time from the new lighting in the hallways, new ceiling tiles and the new roof on the theater.
“While it’s always a topic that we want to discuss with people, it’s really kind of waiting for that right donor to show up and say, ‘hey, what can I do in the Center for the Arts to spruce it up?’” said Ewing.

A goal the university has for CFA is to work on the classrooms and to create a possible recital spot for the theater and band department.
These plans have not been confirmed but are a part of the master plan the university has in store for CFA.
“We continue to try and chip away and make it nice where we can and hopefully that is recognized. But as students come and go in their time frames, they may not notice the difference in the two or four years that they’rein a building,” said Ewing.
The CFA building now has various artworks on all the walls from the AU Art Department that were put up over break. The 60-year-old building will continue to get improvements done as the building gets older.
