Challenge time!

By Matt Brubaker

I have a proposition for all the video gamers and sports nuts out there. I want to challenge the most confident players to a match of “NCAA Football ’11” before this semester is over. Before I get into the details of the proposition, I feel it’s polite to fill you in on my skill set.

I have played the “NCAA Football” series since I moved to Ohio in 1998. I love playing this game with my Buckeyes. I take this game too seriously; I get upset when I allow points, I act as the coach, and I even yell at the virtual running back when he fumbles the football. Borderline crazy? I would say yes. This football game has become not just something to pass time with, but more of a learning tool and an obsession. Thank god for this game. If it wasn’t for “NCAA Football,” I would have to spend time doing homework. Ha, homework.

You might think this sounds crazy, but I feel this football game has taught me a lot about the sport of football, especially strategies on how to call football games. Ever since I have played this game, I have always turned the volume down on the television and practiced calling football games. I’ve taken those “skills” I’ve practiced in virtual football and translated them into my radio broadcasts and, hopefully, my career.

Without giving you all of my tips and strategies, I feel confident enough to tell you how I play so you can give me your best shot. I love playing defense, and I promise you your offensive line will be blown up on numerous occasions.

Hint number one: Pick a team that has a big offensive line. I also am the most balanced offensive player you will ever meet. When I look at the game stats after my impressive victories, I notice my rushing yards are nearly identical to my passing yardage.

Hint number two: Pick a team with a defense that has speed, but size as well.

Last piece of advice for you brave souls: I score, I score a lot, and I score quickly. If you have any chance to beat me, you have to find a way to control the clock and keep my offense off the field.

Here are the details of this proposed challenge. Pending on the amount of feedback, I will play, at most, three people who make the best cases for why they think they are the best college football gamer. I own a Playstation 2 and we will hold this challenge in my room. The opposition will get to pick whether they are the home or away team as well as the conditions and the time of day.

You, as the opposition, also have another option; we can pick a team that we like to play with or we can randomize the teams and keep it balanced and fair. The only thing about random teams is we will find the next ranked team in alphabetical order, so I won’t be Oklahoma and you get stuck with Louisiana Tech. After that, it’s fair game.

Every challenge has its perks but every challenge also has its consequences. If you end up beating me, I will write a follow-up column stating that I’m not as good as I thought I was and your name will be printed in the award-winning Collegian for your outstanding accomplishment and upset. But, if I end up beating you, you have to write a letter to the editor describing your experience and how impressed you were with my abilities. If you’re up to the challenge and accept the rules, I’ll be waiting.

I’m looking for some competition. I’m getting a little tired of beating teams 98-0 on a consistent basis. If you think your game is good enough, let’s see it! Facebook me, email me, even call or text me if you know my number. The ball is now in your court; bring it!
