On Mar. 3, the Ashland University men’s basketball team defeated the Northwood Timberwolves by a final score of 67-52. This marks Ashland’s first postseason victory since the 2023-24 season.
This game was the quarterfinal round of the Great Midwest Tournament. The Great Midwest Tournament is a bracket styled competition between the top eight teams in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
In the contest, the first half of the game was slow, and did not feature much scoring. At the halftime break, the score sat a three-point lead for the Eagles, 27-24. Additionally, the three-point shooting struggle for the team continued after last game’s 3-23 outing. In the first half, Ashland shot 1-7 from deep as a team.
However, Ashland came out in the second half and found an offensive rhythm. The Eagles were pushing the pace, grabbing rebounds, and even managed to knock down three three-pointers.
In the end, it was redshirt senior forward Maceo Williams who was the leader once again for the team. He finished the game with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Ashland had two other scorers in double figures with sophomore Jason Moore pitching in 12 points, and freshman Beau Sigfried with 14 points, and three made three-point shots.
Ashland now advances to the Semifinal round of the Great Midwest Tournament where they will face off against the Lake Erie Storm. In the regular season, the Storm swept the season series with 100-86, and 80-85 winsrespectively.
The rest of the tournament will be hosted by the G-MAC first seeded Walsh Cavaliers, who will play the 5 seeded Findlay oilers at 5:30 p.m. on Mar. 6. The Eagles will then play the Storm following that game, with a tipoff time set for 7:30 p.m.
