The Ashland University men’s basketball team took down the Malone University Pioneers on Jan. 29. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup, Eagles sophomore forward Jason Moore shined with his first collegiate double-double. His final stat line was 21 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Other Eagles involved were redshirt-senior forward Maceo Williams, who went four-for-four from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, and finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Redshirt-junior wing Cooper Davis also played a role scoring 18 points in the matchup.
In the contest, Ashland finished the job without giving up the lead they gained after the first basket of the game. In the first half, their lead grew to 15 points. However, a jump shot by Malone’s Josiah Pierre made the score 38-25 at halftime.
After the break, the Eagles came out and extended their lead to its largest difference at 18 points, with seven and a half minutes to play. Despite the deficit, all hope was not lost for the Pioneers, as they began coming back after threestraight three-pointers.
The Pioneers looked brand new, and ready to make the comeback to take the game. However, they could not stop their main problem all game long by committing 26 fouls throughout the course of the game. This led to Ashland scoring 28 points out of their 42 free throws attempted.
Ashland now remains in second place within the G-MAC, with a 14-6 overall record (8-4 G-MAC). Their next game will be Jan. 31 when they travel to take on the Northwood Timberwolves. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
