The Now & How Journal: Finding inspiration to write

Prompt #3: Who was your best friend in your freshman year of high school?
My+entry+from+March+20+2022.
Lauren Gulden
My entry from March 20 2022.

Whenever I have writer’s block, but I know I want to write something in my journal, I search around me.

Firstly, I look to Tik Tok. The audios on there have some poetic goodness you can get a lot of ideas from. From the photo of today’s column, I wrote down the audio made originally by @Alexdavidkimball and @Lshal47 on Tik Tok. In 2022, when I wrote this entry, this audio struck me as poetic for my time period since I was graduating high school that year.

The audio transcribed reads:

And that’s it.

You wanted more?

I did too, for a while,

but there is no more.

I would love to tell you

that we stayed best friends,

but we didn’t even keep in touch.

All we had was that summer

but we grew and laughed

and we outgrew each other.

That’s okay.

We’re all temporary anyway.

It was never meant to last.

We were just killing time.

In my own book, I began writing what I took away from the quote and how it made me feel. Some other ideas are to write about what you would add to it if it were to be longer.

This audio inspired me to write about my friend group I spent my days with in 2019. I enjoyed some of the simplest moments of happiness with them, which I needed to write down to remember later. That’s what this is all about for me, reminders to the future and past me.

When looking for ideas, I also skim Pinterest boards, Spotify, and Instagram.

Pinterest has mood boards, journal prompts, color palettes, character ideas, and really anything you could hope for. On here, I make intricate boards for each different idea and get lost in pinning until I’ve found exactly what I’ve decided to write. This app is also lovely for showing off your style if you want to gage how your writing/outlining changes over time.

On Spotify, I find myself going down the music rabbit-hole. If you know a certain album has the vibe of your next possible journaling session, click on that album’s “radio” and you’ll hear a whole set of songs like it. As well as this, thousands of playlists exist on the app with the most niche titles, sure to fit what you’re looking for.

On Instagram, my favorite accounts to find inspiration in are @buttonpoetry, @writers, @theunsentproject, and @wnrsfinalnotes.

These accounts range from spoken word poetry to written text posts. I enjoy looking at these because they show a lot of vulnerability which can sometimes be hard to find on the internet. The second two accounts present letters that were either sent or never sent to people. I think those can spark heavy inspiration because of the emotion just bursting out of each one.

And with that, I am going to leave you with this week’s writing prompt which is, “Who was your best friend in your freshman year of high school?”
