The Ashland University men’s basketball team defeated Shawnee State 73-58 on Tuesday night in Portsmouth, Ohio.

AU (2-1) trailed 6-0 early on and did not score until sophomore guard Nick Bapst made a field goal with 14:21 left in the first half.

The Eagles then tied the game 8-all on a 3-pointer by senior forward Torin Wetzel. 

Ashland took its first lead (12-11) at the 9:49 mark after sophomore forward Phil Frentsos sank a free throw.

With the game tied at 14, AU went on a 22-11 run to end the half and entered the break with an 11-point lead.

The Eagles used a field goal by senior guard Adrian Cook to balloon its lead to 20 points at the 12:32 mark in the second half. Ashland cruised from there, and the Bears (3-3) never got closer than 12 points for the remainder of the game. 

Cook scored a game-high 19 points and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior guard Boo Osborne chipped in 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal, while senior forward Marsalis Hamilton added eight points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.

AU shot 54.7 percent from the field and made 10 3-pointers. 

Next up for the Eagles is their home opener against Wilberforce on Nov. 19 at 3 p.m.
