Out with the old, in with the new

Anyone walking to the Center of the Arts or Schar might have noticed that there is now an empty space where Miller Hall used to be.

Facilities Management and Planning Vice President Rick Ewing reported that Miller Hall came down without incident.

“We had to clear some asbestos before we could tear it down but it was no proble,” Ewing said.

Ewing reported that Facilities Management would be seeding the ground where Miller resided once the snow clears.

He also stated that the cupola that was removed from atop Miller Hall would be refurbished and put elsewhere on campus as a landscape feature.

According to Ewing, Facilities Management is also currently renovating the office building the university recently purchased on Claremont.

Additionally, Facilities Management has moved two humanities departments to the new office building from Andrews Hall.

Ewing said that the Claremont building’s lower floor will be used for classrooms starting in the fall of this year.

He reported that the second floor of Andrews would be remodeled into residence halls. The renovations would optimistically be finished by this fall.

Along with the many renovations around campus, Facilities Management has been taking care of the snow and ice around campus.

“Fortunately, there haven’t been any major snow fall events yet,” Ewing said.

“It takes us a couple hours to take care of a few inches and we usually bring crews in early in the morning to clear the parking lots.”

Notably, the Facilities Management and Planning has been designing the new College of Nursing building.

“Pending board approval and fundraising we hope to begin construction in the fall of 2012,” Ewing said.

Ewing stated that Facilities Management and Planning has finished the construction of the Founders elevator and will now be focusing on several smaller side projects and landscaping jobs.
