BarlowGirl, a Christian rock trio of sisters, with opening band Me in Motion, performed in Hugo Young last Friday night, Feb. 4.

The bands performed as a part of Religious Life’s Christian Activities Day.

Sophomore Brianna Moses said she felt that BarlowGirl did an excellent job ministering about God’s love and she said she felt refreshed after the concert.

“The girls were so down-to-earth and I loved that they were able to kick back and relax,” Moses said. “It made them more personable and easier to relate to. It was like they were real people, not just some famous band. I also loved the worship songs that both bands played. It was awesome to be able to worship our God with the bands.”

The Barlow sisters challenge their audience each concert to question why they are created.

“This city was never meant to be the same because you were handpicked to live here,” vocalist and drummer Lauren Barlow said.

People in the crowd were offered the chance to come to the front of the stage to pray with Religious Life’s prayer team. Moses heard that many girls’ benefited from the prayers.

Lauren Barlow said during the concert that the deciding factor to get into Heaven is not the amount of albums sold, number of hit singles listed, brand of clothes worn or number of Facebook friends made.

“The enemy just knows if he lies to you enough he can keep you from your calling,” according to vocalist and bassist Alyssa Barlow. “Because you’re a threat. You’re a threat because of what’s inside of you.”

Moses was unable to meet BarlowGirl after the show, but she did get an autograph from Seth Mosley, the lead singer of Me in Motion.

Sophomore Paul Lattimer participated in the concert as a security and prayer team member.

“I had never heard of them before personally; I tend to listen to metal,” Lattimer said. “I was at the concert because I am an avid participant of Religious Life, and I knew that they needed help with the concert.”

“So I was there as a security guard,” he said. “However, after seeing their show, I’d say that I am a fan of what they do and the message that they present.”

The prayer time at the end of the concert made it an exceptional experience for Lattimer. He said he prayed with two men who gave their lives to Christ.

BarlowGirl had some technical difficulties throughout the concert, but Lattimer said they handled the issues well. They cracked jokes about each other, since they are sisters, and made the audience laugh.

“This is why our acoustic shows are so fun because it’s like you are in our living room. Welcome to our living room,” Lauren Barlow said.

“I like the dialogue because it was a warm and welcoming way to connect the audience to the band,” Lattimer said. “I think that it added to their success because it humanized them as opposed to having the band look like it was on another platform by being on stage.”

Hillary Sites said she enjoyed the acoustic set from the Barlow sisters as opposed to a regular concert because it created an intimate tone and mood in the theatre.

Sites enjoyed that BarlowGirl was interactive because she was able see the sisters’ personalities.

“They weren’t so worried about their performance and stuff that it affected how they performed. It made it more personal and you could relate to it instead of being worried about their image,” Sites said.
