The Ashland University Men’s and Women’s tennis teams were on the road Saturday, April 18, to take on the Thomas More Saints for a strong finish to their regular season. The women dominated 7-0 while the men squeezed out another victory for the Eagles, with a 5-2 finish.
In doubles play, freshman Eduardo Lima and sophomore Bernardo Duarte clutched a victory at No. 1, 7-6. The Eagles fell to the saints during matches No. 2 and No. 3.
The Eagles picked up momentum as they switched gears to singles play, when senior Tomas Paskauskas led the charge with a clutch for Ashland at No. 1, 7-5 in the first game and 6-3 in the second. Duarte played at No. 2, winning both matches, 6-4. Lima, Junior Ryohei Miyake, and Junior Doug Cree also secured victories for the Eagles, adding to a 5-2 overall victory for the men.
On the women’s side, sophomore Maria Jemio and Senior Ana Penteado played at No. 1, finishing the match 6-4 in doubles play. Junior Brittany Witsken and senior Anna Corbel locked in at No. 3 for another 6-4 victory over the Saints.
The Eagles kept the pressure on going into singles play, as Penteado dominates match No. 1, 6-0 in the first game and 6-1 in the second. Corbel played 3 games against the Saints at No. 3, losing the first game 6-2, but turned the match around in the second and third games, 6-4 and 1-0 respectively. The Eagles continued to dominate in singles play, with Senior Constanza Arancibia, Jemio, Junior Evalienna Pryor, and Witsken took their individual matches to add to an overall 7-0 finish for the Eagles.
As both teams dominate Thomas More, the women look to take on the No. 3-Seeded Tiffin Dragons on Thursday, April 23 in Owensboro, Kentucky, while the men conclude their season on a good note following their victory against the Saints.
