On Saturday, April 11, the Ashland University Eagles men’s and women’s tennis teams hosted the Cedarville Yellow Jackets in conference play during the team’s senior night. The AU men fell to the Yellowjackets 4-3, while the women found success, 4-3.
In doubles play, senior Tomas Paskauskas and Sophomore Bernardo Duarte kicked the night off at No. 1, falling to Cedarville 6-4. Followed up at No. 2 were juniors Kaj Salzano and Doug Cree scored 4, failing to secure a victory, 6-4. Junior Ryohei Miyake and senior Reid Opel found themselves with a doubles win at No. 3, 6-4.
The AU women found more success, picking up two victories over the yellow jackets. Senior Ana Penteado and sophomore Maria Jemio locked in No. 1 for the Eagles, with a score of 6-4. Senior Anna Corbel and junior Brittany Witsken secured a win for Ashland at No. 3, 7-5. Senior Constanza Arancibia and junior Evalienna Pryor put up a good fight, coming up short against the Yellowjackets at No. 2, 6-3.
In singles play, the Eagle men won three out of the six matches played with Duarte, Miyake, and freshman Eduardo Lima placing Ashland on the scoreboard. Duarte played No. 2, winning 6-3 in his first game, and 6-2 in his second. Similarly, Miyake won both games at No. 4, while Lima followed suit at No. 6.
On the women’s side, Arancibia played No. 2, crushing the Yellowjackets 7-5 in the first game, and 6-1 in the second. Jemio failed to secure her first game at No. 4 but bounced back with her second and third ganes ending in a victory for AU, 6-2. Finally, Pryor played No. 5, winning 6-1 in her first game, followed by a 6-2 finish over the Yellowjackets.
The Eagles next look to host Edinboro on Sunday, April 12, followed by a road matchup against Mercyhurst on Monday, April 13.
