Giving back to the community in the aspects of sports. That is what the female student athletes did on Sunday, April 19 as the fifth annual ‘Girls in Sports Day’, took place in the Niss Athletic Center.
The event includes different groups of different ages, going around to different sports for 10 minutes to learn about the respected sport. What is different about this year is trying to reach out more to the community.
“We added more work of reaching out to other different local schools that weren’t right in the immediate area,” said Assistant Athletic Director Elizabeth Hoge. “So, it’s trying to get some people that haven’t attended before.”

The sports that young female athletes could participate in were golf, softball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, swim and dive, STUNT, volleyball, track and field, football and lacrosse.
“We’re able to communicate with our community and for the girls, it’s fun to like get around and try different things,” said junior setter Marin Dixon. “Because you never really know what you like until you get to try it.”
“I think it’s important so that the girls can see all the other girls here in sports that they can look up to and all the opportunities available to them,” sophomore diver Ella Howard said.
At each station, the Eagle female athletes were thrilled to teach the young athletes and try to their best to inspire them to keep them going in the world of athletics.
“I would say enjoy every moment, try everything that you can,” said sophomore golfer Maddie Fleck. “Just make sure no matter what sport you’re doing, you’re having fun while you’re doing it.”
Not only did Fleck have advice for these athletes, but fellow Eagle redshirt junior thrower, Leslie Pollock, who is a reigning national champion, had some advice to give.

“Anything is possible,” Pollock explained. “Don’t let certain stigmas or certain setbacks hold you back from doing what you want, no matter what sport it is, just find your passion and shoot for it.”
