On Wed Apr 15, the Ashland University softball team took on the Malone University Pioneers for a doubleheader at Deb Miller Field.
In the first game, Malone got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI sac fly from sophomore pitcher Masyn Baker. But the Eagles were able to respond quickly in the same inning, thanks to senior first baseman Sidney Payton who had an RBI single.
Next inning, the Eagles were able to grab the lead with another RBI single from redshirt senior pitcher, Cassidy Shaffer. But it was a homerun in the sixth inning from junior pitcher Mia Rose that tied the game at two apiece.
The hero of the game came in extra innings from the Eagles. Off an RBI single from senior infielder Amanda Kolar, senior second baseman Danielle Robbins crossed home plate for a 3-2 Ashland win.
After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, the Pioneers were looking to bounce back in the second game. And they did so, scoring five straight runs, with four of those five runs coming in the top of the second inning.
The fifth run Malone scored came off the bat from junior first baseman, Sidney Conti who hit a solo homerun.
But the Eagles were not going down without a fight. In the third inning, Kolar got an RBI single to give Ashland their first run of the game.
In the next inning, junior outfielder Delaney Maynard got a single shot homerun to cut the score to 5-2, still in favor of the Pioneers.
However, Ashland did not stop there. Freshman catcher, Raelyn Koesters, hit the ball to right field for an RBI single. But, just like that, the Eagles found a way to tie it.
Junior outfielder, Maren Metikosh, hit a two-run homerun to give the Eagles their fifth run of the game.
With the game tied at five, heading into the seventh inning, the Eagles were looking to walk off the game once again. And they did so, coming from the bat of Schaffer. She hit an RBI single to get Robbins across home plate for the Eagles’ sixth run and the victory.
Ashland won their sixth straight game, and looking to grab another pair of wins in a matchup against Ursuline. The Eagles will play the Arrows on Sat Apr 19, in doubleheader fashion with first pitch of game one at noon
