From Saturday Apr 11 to Sunday Apr 12, the Ashland University Eagles played two different teams in doubleheader fashion. They played against the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday, with the Lake Erie Storm on Sunday.
In the first game of the doubleheader matchup against the Panthers, the Eagles established themselves early. In the bottom of the first, junior outfielder Kate Kujawski got her second homerun of the season to make the score 3-0.
Both teams were able to secure another run in the game to make the final score 4-1, in favor of the Eagles. In the second half of the doubleheader, Ashland was able to score runs in one inning once again, but this time, coming from three different hitters.
The third inning, Kujawski, redshirt senior pitcher Cassidy Shaffer and senior infielder Amanda Kolar, secured a stat in the RBI column to make the score 3-0. Those three runs were the only ones scored in the game, meaning the Eagles won both games on Saturday, shifting their focus to Sunday’s doubleheader.
Ashland traveled to Lake Erie to take on the Storm, and the Eagles were able to score in every inning played in the first game.
Kujawski got another RBI to her stat sheet, with also getting an RBI from senior outfielder Ashley Veldheer and junior outfielder Delaney Maynard. Even with Ashland making the score 3-0, Lake Erie’s redshirt junior infielder, Vannesa White, homerun in two of her teammates to tie up the game.
But the Eagles were able to answer right back with some homeruns of themselves. Pushing forward the Ashland lead was freshman catcher Raelyn Koesters, junior shortstop Sophia Martin, and Maynard.
Before making the game go into mercy rule affect, the Eagles were able to get another three runs on the board, making the game end early with a 11-3 victory.
Moving into the next game of the doubleheader, the Eagles dominated once again, this time shutting out the Storm. Kolar and Kujawski both got two RBI single in the game, and Maynard got her team-leading fifth homerun of the season as well.
The main accomplishment of this game, though, wasn’t a homerun, but just a normal hit. Senior second baseman, Danielle Robbins, was able to get her 200 hit in her college career.
Next up for the Eagles, is another Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at home on Wed April 15 against the Malone Pioneers. The first game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
