Outside on the freshly mowed lawn of Founders, brightly colored outfits and costumes can be seen while driving by on College Avenue accompanied by rhythmic chants filling the late summer air.
This annual event known as Bid Day, marks the end of a weeklong rush for the sororities on Ashland University’s campus who are looking to add new members to their chapter.
On this day, potential new members find out if they received a bid back from a sorority. This is also a surprise to the current members as they do not know who was given a bid.
This year’s Bid Day will be on Sept. 15.
However, before women can run home to one of the four sororities on campus, they must partake in Rush Week starting on September 9 and ending on the 13.
“There are different days that you attend different sorority events. You feel out what you like and which [sororities] you vibe with,” Sam Deverna, Panhellenic Council vice president of operations, explained.
After meeting with the sororities and talking to the members, the women are encouraged to rank them by which one feels most like home.
There are four sororities on campus: Delta Zeta, Theta Phi Alpha, Alpha Phi, and Alpha Delta Pi.
Each chapter has a specific philanthropy they spend their time fundraising, volunteering and advocating for.
The philanthropies help provide connections for students who are looking to network for future careers.
“It’s a great way to provide leadership opportunities and to make connections. I’ve taken on leadership positions in my sorority and outside the sorority, which have made me more confident in my leadership abilities,” Deverna said.
While Greek Life helps to provide educational opportunities for students, it’s also a great way to get involved on campus.
There are several events hosted throughout the year for Greek Life, but two of the most notable ones are Lip Sync and Greek Week.
“It’s a great way to meet friends and be held accountable with grades. If you want to experience all there is to college life, I would say it’s a great way to get your foot in the door,” Deverna concluded.
