COBE Cafe has shut its doors

The COBE cafe, located on the first floor of Dauch College of Business and Economics, has closed its doors for the foreseeable future.

On Jan. 19, Auxiliary Services sent out an announcement that the COBE Cafe would be closed for the spring semester.

The announcement states that the decision was made after looking at the traffic patterns and sales of the previous three semesters.

According to Fred Geib, general manager of dining services, the cafe’s sales did not even cover the labor needed to keep it open

“Ever since Covid, the cafe has never recovered and I would suspect this is due to less in-person classes,” Geib stated.

The COBE cafe first opened in April 2016 and was intended to give students more options to use their swipes on.

Another cause of the decline in sales could be the abundance of places to eat on campus including Convo, Eagles’ Nest, Tuffy’s Smoothie Bar, Schar Cafe, and the planned cafe inside Archer Library.

Geib also confirmed that staff shortages and the recent budget cuts were not a factor in the decision to close the cafe.

The decision to reopen the cafe will be made prior to the fall 2023 semester.
