Ashland University’s one and only live and local radio station, 88.9 WRDL, will once again be participating in the annual Vinylthon, an event dedicated to playing vinyl records, new and old, for 48 hours straight sponsored by the College Radio Foundation.
This year marks the ninth in a row that WRDL has participated in Vinylthon, where students and faculty alike are encouraged to bring in records to be played on the air.
“It was my gift to the radio station as I graduated my senior year,” says WRDL’s general manager Derek Wood.
“It was something I wanted to leave the radio station with, kind of a yearly tradition; there weren’t that many stations doing it, and I collected vinyl records, the station had vinyl records, students were collecting vinyl records, so it made sense.”
It is the only time of year that listeners can have what Wood calls a “more intimate interaction with the music,” where they can request and hear their favorite songs on the air with almost no limits.

This broadcast is not only the ninth year of Vinylthon, but the 60th year of WRDL being on the air, so some special programs are lined up to celebrate some of that history.
Included as part of the programming is a simulcast audio documentary of Vinylthon history produced by the College Radio Foundation, played at noon on both days of the event.
WRDL has produced a retrospective of the 70’s rock legends of Grand Funk Railroad, including an interview with founding member Mark Farner on the band’s history and success.
Listeners can tune in to 88.9 WRDL’s Vinylthon on any radio in the Ashland area, listen anywhere with the WRDL app, or hear it on wrdlfm.com.
Additionally, listeners can submit song requests on the WRDL app, by contacting WRDL on social media, or by calling 419-207-4889 during the broadcast.
