AU Golf finishes fourth

Thanks to a second-day spurt, the AU women’s golf team finished fourth Tuesday (Sept. 28) at the Ball State Cardinal Classic.

AU was in eighth place after the first day of action. Ashland shot 309 the first day and 304 Tuesday. The Eagles finished with a team score of 613. First place went to Western Michigan with a team score of 596. Southern Illinois (601) was second and Ball State (606) was third.

The field consisted of 14 teams. Ashland and California (Penn.) were the only NCAA Division II schools in the event. Cal finished in a tie for 10th.

AU’s top individual was junior Erin Misheff. She finished in a tie for ninth, shooting 149. Senior Annie Miles finished in a tie for 31st. She shot 156.

Ball State’s Rachael Pruett was the medalist with a final score of 142. Western Michigan’s Britney Hamilton shot 143 and was the runner-up. Bowling Green’s Susannah Grunden was third, shooting 145.

On the men’s side, junior Jay Overy finished in a tie for third place and the men’s golf team finished fourth Sunday (Sept. 26) at Grand Valley State’s Arendsen Invitational.

Overy ended the two-day tournament with a score of 144. He shared third place with Nate Kelly of Saginaw Valley State and Michael Schmitmeyer of Findlay. Overy was six strokes behind the individual leader, Joe McGeean of Findlay (138).

AU’s team score was 608. Findlay finished as the team champion. The Oilers had a team score of 585. Grand Valley State (588) was second and Wayne State (593) was third. Saginaw Valley State (613) was fifth. The field included 11 teams.

AU’s Mark Scott Jr., finished in a tie for 12th. Scott shot 150.

The men now play in the GLIAC Championships, Oct. 3-4. The women play next at the Grand Valley State Laker Invitational, Oct. 3-4.
