Vampires Suck bites as much as Twilight

By Susan McConnell

“Vampires Suck” is about a girl named Becca who moves to Sporks, Washington to live with her dad, Frank. Her father has a hard time seeing her as a teenager and still treats her like a small child, including leaving her room as she left it and carrying her outside in a baby carrier.

She goes to Sporks High School where she is treated poorly, yet all the boys are somehow in love with her boring, Debbie Downer self.

From what friends she is able to make, she learns about the Sullen family, a family that everyone thinks are vampires. However, no one seems to consider them to be strange.

“Vampires Suck” manages to cover both “Twilight” and “New Moon” in 82 minutes. Think of how much time could have been saved if the “Twilight” writers had written their script like the “Vampires Suck” writers did.

The story goes over the first two books with some silly variations thrown in, ripping apart everything from the schoolboy affections for Becca, to Becca and Edward’s first night together. The movie parodies the characters’ run-in with the Zolturi (the Volturi) and then Becca’s transformation into a vampire.

The movie basically makes each character from the book series look ridiculous (not that they needed any help).

Although it doesn’t take much acting skill to make fun of something, the actors in the movie did a great job. Jenn Proske was a very convincing Kristen Stewart impersonator.  Matt Lanter isn’t new to the parody movie world and he played Edward well.

I love the parody movie concept, because really, who doesn’t like to mock things? The problem I have with “Vampires Suck” (and most recent parody movies) is that their mocking is rather immature. They have some good points, but they could have done a better job of going about it.

Maybe it’s just because I’ve grown up, but there were many times during the movie where I wasn’t impressed. There were times when the “Twilight” series actually looked better than “Vampires Suck.” I still think the “Twilight” series isn’t a very good one, but watching this movie didn’t lower my opinion of “Twilight” even more like I thought it would have.

As a former Twi-Hard, I can say that “Vampires Suck” definitely touched on some good “Twilight” points, but I wasn’t very impressed.

Anyone who doesn’t agree? Well, bite me! Just kidding.
