Ashland goalkeeper honored

Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Nolan is the second Eagle in as many weeks to be honored as the GLIAC Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. Last week, it was the conference’s leading scorer Louis Clark and this week it was Nolan, who completed consecutive shutouts in games against Ohio Dominican and Urbana over the weekend.

Nolan now has five clean sheets this season and a goals against average of 1.09.

“I really didn’t expect to get (the award) so it was really nice, but I guess you should expect that as the season goes on,” Nolan said. “We get rewarded when we get results, and that’s what we’ve done so far.”

Nolan came up clutch in both games over the weekend, saving a penalty kick in the waning moments of the game against ODU to keep a shutout as well as making a diving save in overtime against Urbana to keep the game going. Ashland went on to win the Urbana game when James Livingston scored with only 20 seconds remaining.

“It was a long game and we had a couple of let-ups. A guy got an opportunity and luckily I was just right place right positioning, so it was an easy save for me overall,” Nolan said of the save against Urbana.

Ashland leads the GLIAC with a record 8-0-2 and 11-3-2 overall.
