Tennis finishes fifth in GLIAC Tournament

The Ashland University tennis team finished in fifth place at the GLIAC Tournament over the weekend in Midland, Mich.

The Eagles finished their fall season with a 10-5 record and a 7-4 mark in the GLIAC regular season.

AU lost its first match at the Tournament to Wayne State 5-3 Friday (Oct. 22), dropping the Eagles into the fifth-place bracket for the rest of the tournament.

Junior Paige Cooper won her third singles match over Milena Vuksanovic, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Kira Kotova was victorious in fifth singles, beating Debora Correa, 6-4, 7-5. Kotova combined with sophomore Erika Sullivan to win at third doubles, 8-4.

Ashland won its next two matches at the tournament, the first being a 5-0 triumph over Lake Superior State Saturday (Oct. 23). Cooper and junior Torrie Goudy won at first singles, 8-3. Seniors Corinne Pasley and Alex Ware won at second doubles, 8-4. Sullivan and Kotova were winners at third doubles, 8-4. Cooper and Pasley won in singles play to clinch the match.

Ashland secured its fifth-place finish with a 5-3 win over Michigan Tech Sunday (Oct. 24). Pasley and Ware won at second doubles and Sullivan and Kotova won at third doubles to give AU a 2-1 advantage going into singles play. Cooper, Kotova and Ware clinched the win for AU with their victories in singles.

The Eagles resume their spring schedule Feb. 19 at Mercyhurst.
