BS-U

By Matt Brubaker

The college football season is six weeks old and the BCS poll is a week away from being released. So far this season, we have seen Alabama falter against South Carolina, Ohio State go 6-0 and everyone’s favorite BCS buster, the Boise State Broncos, upset Virginia Tech. The Broncos, in the first mock BCS poll, are ranked number one with Ohio State number five. Puzzling? Yes. Boise State really bothers me. Why you ask, well I’ll tell you.

Boise State, year in and year out, plays nobody. The reason, honestly, is because no one wants to lose to them, but their strength of schedule is laughable for a team that is contending for a championship. Coming into 2010, Boise State’s strength of schedule was the 81st most difficult in the country. Here are just a few teams with tougher schedules than the Broncos: Utah State, Duke, Louisiana-Monroe, Colorado State and New Mexico State. Excuse me while I laugh.

What do all of these teams have in common? They are a combined 7-20 in 2010 and none of them are even close to the Top 25. So why is Boise State getting so much love, so much praise and so much credit for beating Toledo and Wyoming?

What makes matters worse, from a fan of an automatic BCS-qualifying school, is the fact that we, as BCS schools, play tough schedules. You look at Alabama, a team playing in the SEC who, for three consecutive weeks, were matched up against a top 25 opponent and went 2-1 during that stretch. Take Oregon for example, which trailed number nine Stanford 21-3 after the first quarter, and then quacked the Cardinal 52-31. And don’t overlook the Buckeyes. Ohio State defeated Miami (FL) in convincing fashion and overcame the “can’t beat a ranked non-conference foe in the regular season” disease this year. All of these teams better start playing not only for wins, but for style points and I think that is wrong. College football is best when the emphasis is on winning, not having to win by 30.

This whole ordeal prompts me to ask for a playoff system. I think it’s BS that a school, whose toughest conference opponent is Nevada, is receiving love and praise in the college football world. The Buckeyes always get ripped to shreds for playing an “easy” schedule and losing to non-conference opponents such as USC, Texas, Florida and LSU. I would argue this; at least we play those teams, at least we are competitive in those games (okay, not Florida), at least our conference has respect and a good reputation. I truly believe if Boise played an entire year in the SEC, or ever the Big Ten, they would go 4-4 in conference play, at best. If Ohio State played the schedule Boise plays, I am willing to bet my life the Mark May’s of the world and other Buckeye haters would bash us straight into the ground. We would be made fun of in the national media more than the little kid on the school playground who just crapped himself.

Nevada needs to upset the Broncos come November 26. I don’t want to see a school back their way into the national title game by beating cupcake squads. And if not, Boise State and the BCS will continue to be, in my mind, just BS.
