My share on scare

By Justine Ackerman

I can’t say I freak out when Halloween comes along. It has just never “done it” for me. The colors are hideous and look good on no one, and trust me, I don’t need a plastic pumpkin and a costume to find me some candy. But I can enjoy some aspects of it. I love a good scare, and while I don’t need Halloween to get one, it certainly makes it easier. I watched about six scary movies this weekend alone. Now, I don’t always watch the scariest movies of all time – “The Hills Have Eyes” and “The Ruins” just didn’t sound fun to me. However, here are the scary movies I do and do not recommend:

Saw3D – worst movie I have ever seen in theaters besides “Twilight: New Moon” and with virtually the same atrocious acting abilities. The 3D made it look even cheesier than it was originally and for a finale it left me wanting more than I have from any of the other Saw movies.

The Strangers – The most terrifying movie to ever be based off true events (in my opinion of course). No matter how many times I watch it, I’m still utterly horrified.

The Human Centipede – Completely disturbing and gross, this movie doesn’t scare you as much as leaves you with a permanent grimace on your face. One of my least favorites; even with the chills I would not recommend it.

Paranormal Activity – This movie could have gone so poorly, however the director and actors were superb, leaving this movie in my top five. I’m dying to see the second one, but am having a slight problem getting my roommate to tag along.

The Uninvited – Plays mind games with you and keeps all the questions unanswered until the end. It has great actors and has the best twist, hands down.

The Last Exorcism – Terrifying until the last thirty minutes, at which time everything falls apart. It was like the director had no clue how to end it, so he quickly just pieced stuff together. My whole group walked out of the theater completely disappointed.

Psycho – I foolishly watched this movie a few years ago thinking that it wouldn’t scare me since it was so old. I showered sideways for two weeks.

The Grudge – A movie that seems to try too hard and left me wanting to watch “The Ring,” just to redeem the 92 minutes I wasted watching a small Japanese boy with dark circles under his eyes meow.

Wrong Turn – A pure classic that I have watched millions of times, there is nothing better than a movie with inbred mountain men possessing extraordinary strength to make you fear West Virginia forever.

The Descent – A brilliant gory movie with a great plot and gut-wrenching ending, this movie might be my number one favorite of all time.
