Stutzman’s career-high, 31 lifts Eagles past Dragons

Sue Ramsey’s Eagles were in unfamiliar territory as they entered Thursday night’s game against the Tiffin Dragons.

The Eagles were in the midst of a four-game losing streak, where they had lost three of those games by three points or less.

How did the Eagles snap their skid? Two words: Jena Stutzman.

Stutzman had a career-high 31 points for the Eagles in a 73-41 drubbing of the Dragons at Kates Gymnasium. Stutzman finished the night going 10-for-13 from the field and converting four of her six three point attempts.

“We put the ball in her hands and let her run the point because she creates so well with the ball in her hands,” Ramsey said. “People might say if you’re at the point you don’t get shots, but in our system, she definitely will get them.”

Ashland jumped out quickly in the first half, taking a 21-6 lead and didn’t allow the Dragons to score for nearly eight minutes.

The Eagles balanced the scoring load in the first half as Stutzman led the way with 12, Lindsey Tenyak pitched in eight, and Beth Mantkowski, Daiva Gerbec and Alyssa Miller each had five.

The Eagles led 38-21 at the intermission, despite shooting just 42 percent from the field. The Eagles, the seventh best free throw shooting team in the county, converted 13-of-16 from the line in the first 20 minutes while the Dragons had just two free throw attempts.

The second half began with Tiffin scoring the first seven points of the half.

Ramsey called a timeout and from then on, it was all Ashland, as the Dragons only scored 13 points the rest of the game.

Stutzman began to weave her way through the Dragon defense as she scored 19 second half points, going 7-of-9 from the field and finished the game with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

“I just wanted to be someone on the team that could get us going, make plays… I was not going to lose tonight,” Stutzman said. “I tried to come ready to play and it worked tonight.”

Gerbec also came ready to play and found success when Stutzman wasn’t scoring as she finished the night with her sixth double-double of the season, notching 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Eagles now improve their record to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC.

They travel to Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State this week looking to continue their winning ways.
