Swimmers struggle over the weekend

By Nick Zavarella

Ashland University’s usually strong swimming program finished third out of four teams over the weekend. AU went up against Kenyon College, Oakland University and Cincinnati University but didn’t finish in typical fashion.

The only event that the Ashland men won was the 200 breaststroke. Cheyne Fisher turned in a first place time of 2:04.42. Fisher was also a member of the AU team which finished fourth in the 200 medley relay. Mat Cook, Chewy Vogele and Jacob Miller accompanied Fisher completing the relay in 1:34.65.

Jonny Kleinhenz replaced Miller on the 400 medley relay team which finished with a time of 3:26.67, good enough for third place. Kleinhenz also finished in seventh place in the 200 freestyle finishing in 1:45.88.

Ashland’s best finisher in the 1000 freestyle was Tyler Chesonis with a time of 10:09.01, good enough for ninth place. The 200 yard IM went to Joe Rodgers from Oakland with a time of 1:54.01. AU’s Alexander Sheil finished in fifth with a time of 1:56.89.

Cook was the oldest swimmer in the water for the 50 freestyle but could only muster a ninth place finish. Cook finished with a time of 22.04, a little over a second after Matyas Keresztes of Oakland who finished first. In the 100 backstroke Cook earned a fifth place finish with a time of 52.72.

Sophomore Mauricio Uranga earned fifth place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.99. Tyler Remmel turned in a time of 2:12.88 in the same event.

The men’s 400 freestyle relay finished with a fifth place finish (3:10.88) while Oakland took first finishing in 3:03.39. Again, AU had the two oldest swimmers in the pool for the 100 butterfly and they finished in fifth and seventh place. Brian Worhatch took fifth with a time of 51.77 while Vogele finished in seventh (52.11).

Fisher and Remmel then teamed in times good enough for third and fourth place in the 100 breaststroke. Fisher finished only two one-hundredths of a second behind Oakland’s Scott Yarbrough.

The women didn’t fare much better last weekend. They also had one first place finish with a string of decent finishes throughout.

AU finished eighth in the 400 medley relay. Kirsten Wengerd, Carianna Doyle, Rachael Ausdenmoore and Mary Cargill turned in a time of 4:10.36. In the 200 IM, Maura Anderson finished in fourth place with a final time of 2:09.49.

Freshman Gabriela Verdugo Arzaluz had the second best finish for the women. Her second place time (1:52.39) in the 200 freestyle was barely behind Cincinnati’s Liz Hansson (1:52.00).

Allison Morgan and Mary Cargill finished third and fourth in the 50 freestyle with times of 24.66 and 24.75. Maura Anderson finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke and won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.42. The 400 freestyle relay team finished in fourth place with a times of 3:34.60. AU also finished fourth in the 200 medley relay with a final time of 1:49.18.

In the 100 butterfly, Maura Anderson took fourth place with a time of 57.70 and Verdugo Arzaluz finished in seventh place with a time of 58.88. Continuing the fourth place finishes, the Eagles took fourth place in the 200 freestyle relay with a final time of 1:38.97.

The swimmers are next in the water at the Wayne State Diving Invitational Saturday.
