Jared Mahone to come to Ashland

By Brian Young

Musician and beat-boxer Jared Mahone will be coming to Ashland University Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. in Redwood Hall. The talented Mahone will be performing his unique blend of pop, soul, funk and even beat-boxing that will be sure to wow the crowd.

Jared Mahone is an independent artist who released an EP titled “THATCitYSCAPE,” in 2007. Hailing from Columbus, Mahone travels the country, showing off his vocal talents and guitar skills. He’s played at many diverse locations, including the University of Delaware, Michigan State University and the University of Tampa. He has even opened for Attaboy, an alternative rock band from Huntington, Ind.

Mahone was discovered by Ashland University Campus Activity Board members at the National Association Campus Activities conference. After performing several songs for the conference guests, he was liked by CAB members, and was invited to do a show here on campus.

“He has a soulful sound that moves the crowd,” said Jerika Gilcreast, one of the CAB members who discovered Mahone. “He is a very talented guy. He has amazing stage presence and will wow everyone… The kid is amazing!”

Mixing the vocal styles of John Mayer and the mood of Jason Mraz, Mahone certainly does have the talent to amaze. His exceptional style allows him to reach his audience with an intensity that is rarely matched. Listing Michael Jackson as one of his major influences, he tries to replicate MJ’s performances and energy in his shows. This energy, combined with Mahone’s unique style, makes for a great show.

Another element of Mahone’s impressive repertoire is his beat-boxing skills. Not only can he sing and play the guitar, but he can throw down a phat beat like none other. The beat-boxing mixes things up and allows for diversity in his shows.

“I love the whole beat-boxing thing,” sophomore Lynda Romer said. “I feel like it separates him from other artists. It makes him different.”

Mahone certainly is different. His style, diversity and energy all combine to make him a great up-and-coming artist. He puts on a great show, so come early in case Redwood is packed, and expect to have a great time being amazed by one extremely talented individual.
