Heidelberg shouts uncle

The Ashland University wrestling team won their final home match against Heidelberg this season in impressive fashion. Ashland is 12-2-1 on the season including 5-0-1 in the last six. The Ashland men got pins at 174, 184, 197 and 285 on their way to the 41-3 triumph.

Freshman Jake Piatt pinned Heidelberg’s Dayne Williams in 2:50 followed by the first pin of fellow freshman Caleb Marsh’s collegiate career at 184. 197 saw another freshman, Corby Running, win by pin in 4:05. Jacob Southwick showed the upperclassmen haven’t lost it by collecting his 15th pin, just two behind the school record.

The success even surprised head coach Tim Dernlan in an interview after the match.

“I didn’t expect to overpower them like that. I guess I should expect this. I think this team has proven that I should have confidence in them. I should expect it and hold them to this standard.”

Because Division I Purdue was the last team to beat AU, the Eagles find themselves up five positions ranked 12th in the latest national poll.

Up next for AU are trips to Tiffin, Ohio Valley and West Liberty followed by the NCAA regional tournament which Findlay will host Feb. 26.
