Winter Luau serves Hawaiian dishes and tropical fun

You heard it, you saw it, you tasted it. What is it you ask? What else could it be besides the annual Convo Food Show?

This year’s event, deemed the “Mai’ e ai Winter Luau Food Show,” took place Thursday, January 27 in the Upper Convocation Center from 4 to 7 p.m.

The food show brought in many corporate vendors in hopes that their products would be a hit within the college demographic. Some popular vendors in attendance included Smith Dairy, Ruggles, General Mills and Nickels Bakery, but several others offered products that caught the attention of the hungry students.

When asked how the Food Show benefits the AU student body, General Manager of Student Dining Fred Geib said, “We value what the students have to say about what is placed on our menu. All of the vendors at the food show have been working with the University for years, and have continued to provide quality products that satisfy our students.”

Geib also brought up the management’s ambition to have a few events outside of Convo in order to stray away from the same environment that the students see day after day.

Entertainment at the event was provided by a luau band, which sought after the crowd’s participation as they navigated through the plethora of sample dishes.

The real question, however, was which dishes were a huge hit, and which needed to hit the trash.

“The chicken and lemon grass pot stickers [provided by Northern Haserhot] were delish, but there is no way I would ever try Spam sushi,” sophomore Katelyn Csenar said in regards to which selections she favored the most and which she avoided entirely.

Luau attendee Vlad Popovic favored Gerber’s breaded chicken tenders but found the orange ginger duck stir-fry to be “not good at all.”

Although everyone has their specific preferences on which options they would like to see placed on the menu, each vendor provided at least a few dishes that each student could enjoy.

While the results of which options will make the cut is yet to be determined, a break from the Convo environment was achieved.
