AU to celebrate Earth Week early this year

By Brian Young

The annual Earth Week is coming to Ashland University early this year.

Because of scheduling issues, this year AU will be observing Earth Week from April 3-9, instead of the national week of April 17-22.

Don’t worry, though; AU is definitely “going green.”

This year, there will be several Earth Week events that are geared toward helping the environment and promoting awareness in hopes of making Earth a better place to live in.

Organized by Community Care’s Green Team and the AU Recycling Department, this year’s events were all carefully chosen to make it a fun and educational way to highlight “green” awareness, according to Sarah Muse, recycling intern and co-organizer of the events.

“This year, we tried to choose a variety of events that would draw in all of campus,” Muse said. “Last year was our biggest celebration of Earth Week yet, so this year we had a goal to top that.”

The week will kick off April 4 at 7:30 p.m. with Recycled Percussion/Paper Bag Decorating with the Green Team in the Eagles’ Nest.

This will be followed April 5 from 4-6 p.m. with a Moss Hill Cleanup. Participants are to meet at the tennis courts and will be given boots and equipment.

One of the biggest events of the week is the “Revive” Eco-Friendly Fashion Show. This unique fashion show will feature outfits made from reused and recycled material. Admission is $1 or free with a donated item of clothing.

Everyone is welcome to attend and donate items, which will be given to Associated Charities and the Pump House in Ashland. The show will be April 6 from 7-9 p.m. in Upper Convo.

Following the fashion show, there will be Emissions Testing and the Green Team Tye-Dye event April 7 from 4-6 p.m. in the Kem/Amstutz parking lot. Students are encouraged to bring their cars to be tested for the chance to win a gas or a tune-up.

There will also be tie-dyeing, so bring white articles of clothing to be dyed with all-natural dyes.

The week will conclude Saturday, April 9, at 10 a.m. in the AU Bookstore with Green Story Time with the Green Team. This will be a great way to end an exciting and educational week, in which all students are encouraged to participate to help save the environment.
