Men’s golf took second at regional playoffs

   The Ashland University men’s golf team took another step closer to a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs Monday, Apr. 11, when it finished second at the Great Lakes Regional #3 Tournament, held at Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind.

   The Eagles shot 596 and finished second in a field of 20 teams.

   AU was in fifth place after Sunday’s first round. AU shot 298 Sunday and Monday.

   The only team to better that score Monday was Indianapolis, which shot 290.

   The Greyhounds won the team championship at this regional event, shooting 582.

   Ferris State (597) was third, Missouri-St. Louis (603) was fourth and Grand Valley State (605) and Wisconsin-Parkside (605) tied for fifth.

   Ashland junior Steve Bednar shot 144 and finished fourth. His teammate, junior Jay Overy, was fifth.

   Overy shot 145. Jacob Yocum of Indianapolis (141) was the medalist and Rockhurst’s Clarke Fry and Garrett Simmons of Ferris State tied for second. They both shot 143.
