Music to Ashland’s Ears

By Cameron Estep

The Ashland County Fair is bringing music back to its repertoire.

2010 was a year of hardship, not only for the country, but the Ashland County Fair as well. After facing an economically tough year, the area will again have something to look forward to.

Jerrod Niemann will take center stage Tuesday night at 7:30pm. Tickets will be selling for only $16 a person.

“We looked for someone who was an up and coming star,” said Fair Manager Steve Englet. “Considering the fact that many of those who attend the fair are female, we generally look toward finding a male.”

Country music shows have been a part of the fair’s showcase for many years.

However, last year’s fair was pretty quiet for anyone who enjoys listening to live country music.

“It’s a huge expense and risk to bring in music,” said Englet. “When you don‘t have the money, you can‘t bring in bands.”

Englet and the others realized quickly that music was important to Ashland’s fair attendees.

“We heard complaints about not having music last year,” said Englet.

Thankfully, the Ashland County Fair Board has found a way to bring music back to the list of this year’s attractions.

There are other events taking place at the Grandstand as well. Opening night starts with the OSTPA Tractor pull. Harness racing and music by the Marine Corps Band will be held Monday, Sept. 19. On Wednesday, there will be the lawn mower derby. Featured Thursday will be the motocross race. The grandstand event that will be highlighted on Friday is the tractor pull. Rounding out the grandstand shows and wrapping up the fair events on Saturday night will be the demolition derby.

While waiting for these events to begin, fair goers are able to try some of Ashland’s new rides being offered this year. Bates Brother Amusement Company is being brought in, bringing new rides for all to enjoy.

If the rides don’t manage to fill the void, visitors can grab some food from one of the vendors who will be serving many of those classic fair foods.

If you’re heading in or out of the fair, there will be someone there who will gladly pick you up in the shuttles. This new feature will make it much easier for people to find their vehicle.

Now is the time to make those fair plans. Grab some friends and come to the Ashland County Fair for all the fun events, rides, and food.

“We’ve expanded the fair and hopefully we have something here for everyone.” Englet said.
