Volleyball weathers the Storm

The volleyball team (9-3, 7-1 GLIAC) went all-out on the Lake Erie Storm since they didn’t have another game this past weekend. The Eagles took it to the Storm, sweeping the sets (25-14, 27-25, and 25-11) en route to their fifth straight win.

Junior Brittany Snider led the team in kills (12) on a .423 hitting percentage for the match. In the first set alone she was seven-of-seven on attacks to start. Senior Anesia Benton also had four kills on five attacks in the first set. The Eagles hit a .333 hitting percentage and held the Storm to a negative-.048 hitting percentage in the set.

The Eagles also recorded a season high in service aces, with a total of 11. Junior Crystal Elliott had four of those aces, while sophomore Kate Eckels had three.

The second set was much tighter though, and the Eagles were up against two set points at one time. The Storm couldn’t capitalize and committed two errors which let the Eagles take advantage, coming back to win the set with a kill by Snider followed by an ace by Elliott.

The third set was all Ashland, as they only committed three attack errors on their way to the easy set victory and the set sweep. The Eagles hit .375 for the set and held the Storm to a .000 hitting percentage for the match.

Crystall Elliott led the team with 31 assists for the match. Libero Arian Martin had the time high in digs with 16, while sophomore Megan Rohlfs added six of her own.

This upcoming weekend the Eagles play three straight games in Kates Gymnasium, starting with Grand Valley State on Friday. They then welcome Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State to round out the weekend.

This weekend there are promotions going on each night as well. Friday night all students in attendance will receive a rally towel and a water bottle. Saturday night is Youth Day in which any children 12 and under get in for free. Also on Saturday, fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink for AU’s “Think Pink” campaign. Sunday is family day, where a family of four can get into the game for only $10. So make sure to come out and support the Ashland Eagles volleyball team this weekend!
