Homecoming events cancelled

A few homecoming festivities were inconvenienced this year due to some unforeseen and unfortunate events.

A favorite among most AU students, Banana Splittin’ was originally scheduled for Oct. 12, but cancelled that morning.

“Banana Splittin’ was canceled because the weather was getting bad,” Campus Activities Board member Jerika Gilcrest said. “We couldn’t predict that the weather was going to be nice later that day. We also didn’t have a space to house Banana Splittin’ inside because we had so many teams signed up and committed to coming.”

The number of participants and eager competitors were much appreciated and CAB is hoping that the disappointment won’t be permanent.

“We are thinking about hosting [Banana Splittin’] next semester because it is a great event and AU loves it,” Gilcrest said.

Comedian Dean Edwards was supposed to take the stage on Oct. 14. Students were startled when they received a text message and/or email alert announcing that the routine time was pushed back from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. A little over an hour later, another alert was sent out announcing that the comedian too was cancelled.

“The comedian was canceled because his flight was delayed unexpectedly,” Gilcrest said. “He tried to find other flights, but sadly those odds were against him. Overall, it was just things that we had no control of.”

While the week’s activities didn’t all go according to plan, many students agree that it was still enjoyable. With a fourth-quarter comeback to beat No. 4 Wayne State in the homecoming football game, some students believed that there was still enough excitement to fill the weekend.
