AU falls to ODU, playoff hopes dashed

By Ryan Sampson

The Eagles lost all hope of winning a GLIAC championship and a playoff spot Saturday when they were upset by Ohio Dominican at home, 20-17.

The Eagles were stopped short at the ODU 30 yard-line on 4th and 1 by inches, and the Panthers capitalized on the momentum and drove down the field with 8:55 left on the clock, kicking a field goal to take a 20-17 lead.

“We didn’t make any plays across the board, offense, defense, special teams,” head coach Lee Owens said.

The Ashland offense was held to a total of 274 yards, and the defense gave up a total of 344 yards to the Panthers, who are now 6-4 on the season. The Eagles now stand at 6-4 on the season and 6-3 in the GLIAC.

Their dreams of an NCAA playoff spot are completely diminished, and for the 19 seniors on the team, they will play their last game ever in an Eagles uniform this Saturday.

On the bright side, Anthony Capasso found the end zone for the third straight game and had a career high in receptions (seven) and yards (101).

ODU dominated from the start of the game by leading in time of possession 33:08 to 26:52. The Eagles will play their final game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lake Erie.
