Racing to the finish

The track and field teams competed in their final meet before the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships this upcoming weekend. The teams traveled to Ohio State for a tune-up meet for many team members to try to better their times and distances. The Eagles had a very successful day, with many athletes placing in many events.

For the women, freshman Jennifer Foster placed first in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet 5 3/4 inches and third in the high jump at 5 feet 5 3/4 inches. Senior Janine Tessarzik placed first in the weight throw with a mark of 57 feet. Along with Tessarzik, freshman Cynthia Watt placed third with a mark of 56 feet ¼ inch. Freshmen Anna Mion and Joyce Badesrtscher, senior Angelique Cunningham and junior Stephanie Stoffel placed second in the medley relay with a time of 12:23.13. 

The men are represented by a group of talented and strong throwers. Ashland’s head coach Jud Logan, who is an Olympic thrower, prides himself in finding the best athletes and throwers in the nation and trains them all year long to put together one of the top throwing programs in the country. 

Ashland has one of the best throwers in the nation in senior Ryan Loughney. Loughney won the weight throw with a mark of 21.74 meters and Cory Meuleman finished fourth with a mark of 20.59 meters. 

In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Jacob Cook finished first with a time of 49.48 and junior Cory Lamar finished third with a time of 50.16. Freshman Drew Windle took first in the 600 at 1:19.42 and, in the 200, junior Justin Chappell finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.42. 

Ashland now looks ahead to this weekend, when they will compete in the GLIAC Championships at the University of Findlay on Friday and Saturday
