Baseball team catching fire in midseason

After playing against future Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents Malone and Walsh, the baseball team traveled to north to Michigan, where they took three of four against Northwood. The Eagles had a record of 10-8 (3-1 GLIAC) at that point. They will play against GLIAC opponents for the rest of the regular season.

After the Eagles started the season 10-8, they have gone on to win 12 of their last 16 games, including a five-game win streak and a current win streak of four games. The Eagles now have a record of 22-12 on the season, 14-6 in the GLIAC. After winning three of their first four GLIAC games of the season, the Eagles looked to continue their success in conference against five different conference opponents from March 28 to April 15.

March 28 vs. Tiffin

In the first game of a doubleheader with Tiffin, Ashland outlasted the Dragons 15-11. Both teams combined for 18 hits each in the contest.

The Eagles dominated the second game as they won by the score of 10-2.

Junior catcher John Broll accounted for a huge chunk of Ashland’s offense in both games, going six for nine with two home runs and 11 RBIs on the day. Sophomore third baseman Tyler Gray added two home runs.

March 31- April 1 at Grand Valley St.

Ashland traveled to Grand Valley State and went 1-3 in four games against the Lakers. The Eagles lost the first two games of the series on March 31 by the scores of 0-1 and 2-4. The next day the Eagles split the doubleheader with GVSU winning the first game 7-1 and losing the second game 9-2. Freshman second baseman Giancarlo Saia accounted for five hits on the weekend and junior pitcher Brad Thomas pitched seven innings and gave up only four hits and one run in the Eagles’ lone win at GVSU.

April 4 at Lake Erie

The Eagles traveled to Lake Erie College to finish their six game road trip with a doubleheader against the Storm. Ashland was able to sweep Lake Erie by winning both games. Ashland won both games, 7-5 and 9-6. Ashland had 23 hits combined in the two games against the Storm. Gray went five of eight with five RBIs on the day.

April 7 and April 9 vs. Ohio Dominican

Ashland began an eight-game home stand by playing two doubleheaders against the Ohio Dominican Panthers. AU won three out of four against ODU. On Saturday, the Eagles won both games by the scores of 9-1 and 4-2. After taking Easter Sunday off, the Eagles split the doubleheader with the Panthers on Monday, winning the first game 17-2 and losing the second game 10-5. Pitchers Aaron Hilt and Brad Thomas threw for complete game wins on Saturday. AU’s offense had 13 runs on 20 hits on Saturday, and then the Eagles had 24 hits and 22 runs on Monday.

April 14-15 vs. Saginaw Valley St.

The Eagles gave SVSU a rough welcoming, as they swept the Cardinals in a four game series. The Eagles won the first game 2-1 in nine innings and then went on the to win the next game 12-0. The Eagles’ third victory over SVSU was 3-1, and then AU went into extra innings one more time, beating the Cardinals 7-6. Senior center fielder Zach Thompson had a clutch RBI single in the first game to send the game to extra innings. Freshman pinch hitter Kyle Vozar delivered the game-winning hit in the ninth inning. Hilt had another complete-game outing in the second game to earn his sixth win of the season. Junior pitcher Zach Botjer earned his fifth win of the season in the third game of the series. Saia had the game-winning single in the fourth game.
