Baseball hits a wall

The baseball team has had a successful season thus far. After winning four straight games against Saginaw Valley State April 14 and 15, the Eagles had an impressive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record of 14-6. They took that record into last weekend with road games against Tiffin and Wayne State.

Ashland (23-17, 15-11 GLIAC) has faced a minor slip in the road after its six-game road trip, spanning April 18-22. The Eagles went to Tiffin to play a doubleheader Wednesday, then traveled north to Wayne State for two doubleheaders on the weekend. They went 1-5 in those games.

Tiffin

The Eagles dropped both games to Tiffin Wednesday. They lost the first game 2-1 in eight innings.

Their only two hits of the game came from senior center fielder Zach Thompson.

Junior pitcher Brad Thomas pitched great – 7.2 innings, five hits, two earned runs – but he was charged with his first loss of the season (6-1).

Tiffin won the second game 10-4. Ashland’s offense managed nine hits but only scored four runs. Junior pitcher Aaron Hilt (6-4) was charged with the loss.

Wayne State

Ashland traveled to Wayne State for a four games series over the weekend. The Eagles went 1-3 in those four games against the Warriors.

Saturday, the Eagles took the first game by a score of 7-2.

Freshman left fielder Adam Urbania had three hits and two RBI to lead the Eagles and pitcher Zach Botjer earned his sixth win of the season.

The Eagles lost the second game 4-0. Their offense was held to only two hits in the contest.

Sunday, the Eagles lost the first game of the day 4-1. Freshman second baseman Giancarlo Saia led the Eagles with two hits.

The second game of the day was also a loss for the Eagles, 2-0. The Ashland bats were silenced again, as AU only managed two hits in the contest.

The Eagles are coming into the homestretch of their season. They will host Lake Erie Wednesday and Findlay Saturday and Sunday before traveling to Hillsdale to finish out the regular season. Ashland is currently fifth in the GLIAC standings. The conference tournament will be held in Chillicothe May 9-12.
