Track & Field succeeds with split squad

The track and field team competed in two different meets this past weekend. The team traveled to the Northeast Ohio Invitational at the University of Akron. Along with Ashland, Akron, Kent State and Youngstown State were in attendance at the invitational. Highlights from that meet included some top finishes in the long distance events.

Senior Mandy Farson won the gold medal in the 3000 meter run. AU’s McKenzie Roth and freshman Anna Moon finished second and third in the 1500 meter run. Senior Cheryl Bourne took third in both the 100 meter hurdles and the long jump.

The women had a successful meet in the relay races with two second-place finishes in the 4×100 relay and the 4×400. As for the men, junior Craig Call finished first in the hammer with a huge mark of 196 ft, six in. Senior Tyler Kreim won the javelin with an outstanding 207 ft, eight in. The men would also place second in the 4×4 relay, which included a team of Devin Bermudez, Wesley Washington, Damian Winner and Brian Pongallo.

The Eagles also competed in the Jesse Owens Invitational at Ohio State. AU continued its dominance in the field events, including the hammer event. The Eagles took all three of the top spots, with strength and conditioning coach A.G Kruger winning the event with a final mark of 74.4 meters. Senior Ryan Loughney took second at 67.37 meters and junior Garrett Grey finished third at 64.09 meters. In the women’s discuss, Janine Tessarzik finished in third place with a final mark of 49.01 meters.

The Eagles will compete in the All-Ohio Championships this weekend at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The team will have two more weeks to compete and ready themselves for their upcoming GLIAC Championships meet May 2-4.
