Men’s golf

The men’s golf team got off to an outstanding start with a first-place finish at Ohio Dominican’s Kisor Classic Sept. 10.

The Eagles shot 599 to best the hosts by two strokes. Capital (638), Cincinnati State (654) and Urbana (686) rounded out the top five.

AU senior Brendan Jenkins earned medalist honors, firing a two-day score of 145. Austin Schreiber shot 147 to finish in a three-way tie for second.

Junior Ryan Hassman and senior Mark Scott finished in a tie for eighth with a score of 152.

Tuesday, Ashland tied for eighth in Bowling Green’s John Piper Intercollegiate tournament with a three-day score of 910 at Stone Ridge Golf Club.

Cleveland State won the tournament with a score of 886.

Scott shot 71-71-79 for a three-day score of 221 to lead the Eagles. He finished tied for seventh.

Jenkins shot 227 (T-19), Schreiber fired 229 (T-23) and junior Nick Blackburn shot 235 (T-49).

Next up for Ashland is the GLIAC North Invitational Sept. 22 and 23 in South Haven, Mich.

Women’s golf

The women’s golf team opened its season Monday and Tuesday at the NCAA Championship National Preview at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The two-day tournament was cut short by storms in the area Tuesday, so the two-round scores from Monday were used as final scores.

Ashland finished 11th a 13-team field loaded with the best talent Division II has to offer. The Eagles shot 659.

Lynn University won the tournament with a score of 606.

Freshman Ali Green shot 78-78-156 to lead the Eagles in a tie for 24th.

Sophomore Madison Musick shot 160 (T-33) and senior Holly James and sophomore Abby Tepe fired 167 (T-50).

Next up for the women is the Indianapolis Fall Invitational Sept. 23 and 24 at Heartland Crossing Golf Links in Camby, Ind.

Women’s tennis

The women’s tennis team is unbeaten through five matches, all of them Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competitions.

The Eagles beat Tiffin in their first match 7-2 Sept. 7 and took a 5-4 decision over Ohio Dominican Sept. 9.

Then, this past weekend, the Eagles hosted matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Friday’s match was against Saginaw Valley State. The Eagles took four of the five singles matches on the way to a 5-4 victory.

Ashland’s Erika Sullivan (7-5, 6-4), Zdenka Pozo (6-3, 6-1), Mortina Baca (6-4, 6-3) and Daniela Alvez (6-1, 6-2) all won in singles play.

In doubles, the Cardinals took two of the three matches. Alvez and Kira Kotova picked up the only win for the Eagles to seal the overall victory.

Saturday, Michigan Tech came to town and also fell 5-4, with Ashland again taking four of the six singles matches.

Kotova (6-0, 6-2), Baca (6-1, 6-1), Alves (6-2, 6-0) and Andrea Ruiz (6-1, 6-3) all won in singles play.

Sullivan and Pozo picked up Ashland’s fifth win of the day in doubles action.

Sunday, the Eagles knocked dominated Lake Superior State, sweeping the Lakers 9-0.

Sullivan, Pozo, Baca, Ruiz and Alves all won in straight sets, and Kotova came back from a dropped first set to win 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Sullivan and Pozo (8-1), Baca and Ruiz (8-4) and Kotova and Alves took finished off the sweep in doubles play.

Next, Ashland heads to the Fall IT Regionals, which last today through Sunday.
