Twenty One Pilots inspire audience

By Susan McConnell

On Saturday, Sept. 15 the band 21 Pilots played a concert in Redwood.

21 Pilots’ members are Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.

Joseph and Dun believe strongly in joy and feel that you can have it even when you’re sad.

The band likes to incorporate recorded music into their live music. They also engage the audience by breaking up their singing with dancing on top of their piano and doing back flips.

They started the show wearing skeleton masks.

They played an hour set of their songs and some covers.

The most notable cover was “Shout!” by The Isley Brothers.

Their songs enthused the audience, and the band was very well received.

The most memorable of their original songs was, “Car Radio,” which was inspired by an actual event where the singer in the band had his car radio stolen.

I went to this concert having never heard of the band before.

I decided to go in blind, not previewing the band’s music beforehand.

My assumption of what the band would be like was correct, but only for certain songs. On other songs it sounded more like rapping than singing, but the lead singer does have a good voice.

A lot of the songs had lyrics that make you think, which caused me to calmly listen and take everything in, instead of getting actively into the music like the other attendees.

The only complaint I had was how loud the music was, but I seemed to be the only one (makes me wonder if I was born in the wrong generation sometimes).

The concert was a good way to spend my Saturday night and I hope to see them again in the future.
