Eagles win two in a row after tough loss at ODU

By Kevin Stoicovy

The Ashland men’s basketball team went into a road game at Ohio Dominican with an overall record of 5-10 (3-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) on Jan. 24.

Since then, the Eagles have won two of three to improve their record to 7-11 (5-10) in what has been a disappointing season for the squad.

At ODU (4-12, 1-12)

The Eagles traveled to Ohio Dominican hoping to record their first road win of the season against the lowly Panthers.

Instead, the Panthers upset AU 75-71 and caused the Eagles to drop to 0-8 away from Kate’s Gymnasium.

The win for Ohio Dominican ended a 13-game losing streak and also gave the Panthers their first GLIAC win of the season.

The Eagles had good individual efforts from Brook Turson and Evan Yates, but they couldn’t make the plays they needed down the stretch to win.

Ohio Dominican hit two free throws to go up 73-71 with 26 seconds remaining. Ashland then turned the ball over twice in those 26 seconds and couldn’t make the last-minute comeback.

Turson had a career-high 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Yates had 14 points and was 10 of 12 from the free throw line.

Morgan Jones led Ohio Dominican with 22 points and five assists.

Tiffin (7-13, 4-10)

The Eagles came home from ODU wanting to forget about the bad loss they just had.

They were able to do that and pull out a close victory at home versus Tiffin, 67-64.

AU made some changes to the starting lineup hoping to find the winning formula. Seniors Evan Yates and Ronnie Steward, who had been regular starters all season, were replaced by sophomores Cole Krizanic and Paul Honigford in the starting lineup.

Krizanic ended up playing a huge role in the game and led the Eagles with 15 points on five 3-pointers.

The Eagles got out to a quick start in the game, leading 23-11 halfway through the first half of play. Their lead would continue to shrink though as the Dragons kept grinding away at it.

Tiffin retook the lead, 43-42, off a fast-break dunk by Jonathan Sutherlin with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

From that point on it was a back-and-forth contest until Brook Turson made six of six free throws in the final minute to clinch the three-point win for the Eagles. He finished with eight points, all of which came from the free throw line

The Eagles improved their record to 6-3 at Kate’s Gymnasium for the season with the win.

Tiffin’s Joe Graessle finished with 21 points to lead all scorers.

Lake Erie (6-13, 3-12)

Ashland continued its good play at home with a convincing 81-61 victory over Lake Erie.

What made the win even more convincing was that AU did it without senior guard Ronnie Steward. Steward missed the game for Ashland due to a knee injury he suffered in practice. There is no timetable for his return.

Brook Turson stepped up to the occasion, however, setting another career high with 27 points. Turson was 9 of 11 from the field and made eight 3-pointers.

That marked the second time in three games that Turson set a career high.

AU only led by seven at halftime, but a dominant second half performance helped the Eagles calm the Storm and earn their fifth GLIAC victory of the season.

Evan Yates also had a big impact for AU with a double-double. He had 21 points on 8 of 9 shooting and 11 rebounds.

Lake Erie’s Riley Thomas led the Storm in points with 14.
