Men’s basketball splits on road

Ashland University Men’s basketball went on the road this past weekend to take on Ohio Dominican and Tiffin.

AU went into these two games on a four game losing streak that eliminated them from the GLIAC postseason.

The Eagles (10-15, 7-14) will have a losing record for the first time since 2009-2010 when they finished 13-15.

The Eagles have struggled in particular away from Ashland this season, with just one win in nine games on the road before this past week’s games.

At Ohio Dominican, (5-19, 3-17)

Ashland won its second road game of the season with a 12-point win at Ohio Dominican on Thursday.

One of bright spots for Ashland this season has been the evolution of the team’s youth, in particular Wendell Davis.

Davis had one of his most productive games of the season against the Panthers, scoring 18 points and hauling in 14 rebounds.

Davis made eight of his twelve shots to improve his season shooting percentage to 60.2 percent. That mark is the third best in the GLIAC this season.

In his two games against Ohio Dominican this season, Davis has scored 37 points and shot 17 of 25 (68 percent) from the field.

The Panthers held an early 11-2 lead in the first half, but the Eagles quickly turned things around by taking the ball to the basket and scoring on layups and short range jump shots. AU shot just one nine from three-point range in the first half.

After leading 36-30 at the half, the Eagles continued to do most of their scoring from around the basket and from the free-throw line. Ashland shot 14 of 28 in the second half and made 16 of 19 free throws.

Ohio Dominican’s Chad Nelson led all scorers with 22 points.

Ashland beat the Panthers (5-19, 3-17) both times they met this season by a combined 28 points.

At Tiffin, (9-15, 5-14)

Ashland was unable to have the same kind of success at Tiffin as they did at Ohio Dominican, falling to the Dragons by nine.

Tiffin (9-15, 5-14) took advantage of a rough shooting day from the Eagles. Ashland shot just 41.1 percent for the game and just 38.7 percent in the second half.

The Dragons also took advantage of getting to the free-throw line. Tiffin made 27 of its 34 free throws.

Tiffin’s Joe Graessle and Khalel McCormick were the big scorers on the day. Graessle led all scorers with 27 points and McCormick added 24.

Graessle is fourth in the GLIAC in scoring at 21.6 points per game.

Ashland was lead in scoring by senior Will Evans. He had 21 points and eight rebounds. Wendell Davis recorded his second-straight double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.

The score was all locked up at 36 at the half, but foul trouble for the Eagles sent Tiffin to the free throw line 27 times in the second half. The Dragons made 22 of their 27 foul shots to pull away.

The Eagles will have their final game of the season this week. They host Lake Erie on Thursday at Kates Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
