One and done: QB Chapman leaves AU

2013 Ashland University quarterback Tra’von Chapman will not be playing for the Eagles this coming fall. The former starter for the Eagles has left the school after being granted permission by head coach Lee Owens to visit the University of Akron.

Chapman would have to sit out one full season if he transfers to play at a Division 1 school, but he would still be eligible to receive a full scholarship at Akron if he were to attend. According to head coach Lee Owens, Chapman had made financial requests that Ashland couldn’t grant as a Division II program.

Chapman graduated from Kent Roosevelt High School in Kent, Ohio. His high school coach, John Nemac, is now the director of player personnel at Akron University.

Chapman arrived at Ashland last August after being dismissed from the Univeristy of Pittsburgh football team after pleading guilty for an altercation in April 2013.

Chapman started the final six games of the 2013 season for the Eagles. He completed 90 of 173 passes for 1,154 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. He was also a threat to run the ball, with 54 carries and one rushing TD.

Reshirt freshmen Travis Tarnowski was named the starting quarterback by Owens to replace Chapman in 2014.

2013 opening day starting quarterback Austin Bruns will be the backup. Bruns started AU’s first four games last season before Chapman took over.
