Ashland University’s women’s basketball team snagged an 82-54 conference win against Malone Saturday afternoon in Kate’s Gymnasium. The win improved the Eagles record to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The GLIAC conference matchup presented a Snyder sister matchup, featuring Ashland freshman forward Laina Snyder and Malone senior forward Lindsy Snyder.

Cheering echoed through Kate’s at tip-off when Laina and Lindsy stood face-to-face. The momentum swung in the Eagle’s direction when Laina flicked the ball for Eagle possession.

“[Playing against Laina and] the fact that I knew what she was going to do was really weird,” said Lindsy following the game.

“It was the first time I’ve ever seen her on the other team,” said Laina. “It was hard not to go over and give her high fives.”

Laina Snyder maintained her focus on the game, leading the Eagles with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

Senior guard Taylor Woods took the reigns and hit a top-of-the-circle 3-pointer to start off an Eagle 3-0 lead. Woods posted 17 points, five of which were 3-point shots.

The competition remained close in the beginning, with two ties prior to halftime. Sophomore forward Suzy Wollenhaupt broke the 14-14 tie at the 11:13 mark with a layup, assisted by Woods. Junior guard McKenzie Miller sunk her second 3-pointer of the match with 6:09 left to play in the first half, to give the Eagles a 25-22 lead.

“I loved our entire post unit,” said head coach Sue Ramsey. “They look for each other and really got some good action inside [the paint].”

Less than two minutes into the second half, the Eagles expanded their lead to 10 points on a Woods 3-pointer.  The flow of the offense and strong defense carried the Eagles into an average 21-point lead throughout the second half.

Freshman forward Andi Daugherty contained Malone’s offensive leader Rachel Goddard (averaging 11.1-points per game), allowing only 2-points in the second half. Daugherty ended the game with 9 points and 4 rebounds.

“It was a real, total team effort and that felt good today,” said Ramsey.

The Eagles will continue their 3-game home streak on Thursday against Findlay (9-5, 5-5).
