The Ashland Eagles women’s basketball season came to an end on March 3. Ashland, as the eighth seed in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament, had to travel four hours north to Midland, Mi. to take on the top seeded Northwood Timberwolves. The best team in the conference only had one loss through G-MAC play in the regular season, so Ashland knew they had a tough task ahead. After a hard fought effort, the Eagles fell 79-72.
It was a back and forth first quarter, with both teams trading blows. Northwood led 20-18 after one, led by seven points from senior guard Maeve St. John. The Eagles kept the Wolves within striking distance throughout the entire first half, only trailing by five at halftime 39-34.
Ashland came out on a roll in the third quarter, going on a 12-2 run to take a 46-41 advantage midway through the period. The momentum was all on the road team’s side, who had won the previous four G-MAC championships.
But, the Timberwolves quickly responded back with a 26-9 run, led by many trips to the free throw line, and the other Northwood star, sophomore Lea Holmes. But even with all the haymakers being thrown at the underdog Eagles, Ashland would not quit.
They cut the Timberwolves lead down to five in the final minute of the game. But Northwood was able to hold on to advance to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Semifinals on March 6. The Timberwolves will host the fourth seeded Walsh Cavaliers at 5:30 p.m.
Freshman forward Jenna Slates ended her rookie campaign with another strong double double. Slates went for 21 points and 13 rebounds, going 10-for-19 from the field. Senior guard Alysa Lopez scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds on the night.
For Northwood, Holmes led them with 19 points, with St. John right behind her with 18.
Ashland finishes the 2025-2026 season with a 14-13 overall record, going 10-10 in conference play.
