Junior Molly Winner has topped NCAA Division II in the women’s weight throw throughout her three years at Ashland, and on Jan. 30 she wrote her name in the AU record books.
With her top throw being 21.45 meters, it kept her spot as the leader of NCAA Division II and broke an 11-year-old record set by Shatora Lewis in 2015 (21.38 meters).
There were many other successes on night one of the Division I dominated PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational in Louisville, Ky.
In the women’s 800-meter run A division, senior Jade Avance finished second with a time of of 2:07.64, improving her provisional (provo) mark that qualifies her for the NCAA Division II National Championship set to take place in Virginia Beach, Va., on March 13-14. Avance is now the No. 2 runner in the country for the 800-meter run.
In the same event, senior Hope Sievert earned a new provo mark with a time of 2:10.87, which placed her fifth.
In the men’s pole vault A division, graduate student Brayden Jackson tied for third at 5.12 meters.
Day two brought even more success for the Eagles when Freshman Jon Lutz broke Ashland graduate Trevor Bassitt’s freshman indoor record in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds. This earned Lutz fourth in the event.
Multiple Eagles also earned new provo marks throughout day two: senior Braeden Geist in the men’s 5,000-meter run open with a time of 14:19.58; junior Odessa Smith in the women’s 60-meter hurdles open semi-finals where she ran 8.78 seconds and the women’s 4×400-meter relay of sophomore Brianna Cheveney, sophomore Olivia Saylor, freshman Leila Evans, and Avance with a time of 3:48.68.
Winner placed third in the women’s shot put open, throwing 15.45 meters.
The Eagles will return home to the Niss Athletic Center when they host the fifth annual Jud Logan Light Giver Open on Feb. 6-7.
