The Ashland University women’s basketball team made history over the weekend, becoming the 13th Division II team ever to win 1,000 games. The historic accomplishment came in Cleveland, Ten. on Nov. 22 when Ashland defeated Lee University 89-78.
After a close first quarter, the Eagles took complete control in the second period. Ashland outscored Lee 29-13 in that frame to take a 20-point lead at halftime. The lead proved too much for the Flames, as they ended up falling by 11.
Ashland had four players score in double figures, led by Corri Vermilya’s 24 points. Vermilya continued her red-hot start to her sophomore campaign, going 9-of-14 from the field and 3-for-4 from downtown. Ashley Mullet also kept her great start up, scoring 23 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting, a perfect 3-for-3 from three and 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Freshman forward Jenna Slates has been a steady presence on the boards so far, grabbing eight more rebounds in the Lee
victory. Off the bench, grad transfer Alysa Lopez went for 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 25 minutes.
For Lee, it was a two-player show with guard Libby Privett and forward Anna Muhonen scoring 56 of the Flames’ 78 points. Privett scored a game-high 32 points on 10-for-23 shooting and 10-for-11 at the foul line. Muhonen went for a double-double with 24 points and 11 boards.
Ashland moves to 2-2 on the season with a matchup on Nov. 24 against the twelfth nationally ranked Union Bulldogs at 4 p.m.
