On Saturday, March 15 Ashland University’s Head Baseball Coach John Schaly broke the NCAA Division II baseball all-time wins record with 1,325 career wins.
This now means that Schaly has more career wins than any other head coach in NCAA Division II baseball history.
Schaly and the Eagles baseball team celebrated this historic achievement after sweeping Walsh University in a four-game series at Dunges Field that same Saturday.
A ceremony was also held following the game. Director of Athletics Al King, Ashland University President John Parrish Peede and member of AU Board of Trustees, Bob Archer, were present for the commemoration.
Schaly’s held the position with Ashland University’s baseball team since his arrival in 1998.
Before his time in Ashland, Schaly coached at St. Leo University in FL and at Berry College in GA.
But the majority of his career wins came from his time spent with Eagles baseball. Over the past 28 years, Schaly has put 962 wins in the record books for the Eagles.
Schaly credits his success to his players and staff: “I’ve never gotten a base-hit, never made a big pitch or big play in the field, it’s the players.”
He adds that he’s “just been blessed with great players over the years; guys have bought into our system, worked hard, and they help define our culture.”
While Schaly takes on a big role, many others have been there to support his efforts.
“I’ve been blessed with so many great assistant coaches, the staff I have currently right now, and also support staff, trainers and sports information, one guy can’t do it, there’s no way it’s impossible,” said Schaly.
