Zoe Miller’s path to success at Ashland University has been defined by her passion for basketball, personal growth, and the lasting friendships she has made along the way.
As a senior on the Ashland University women’s basketball team, Zoe reflects on her journey—one that began in her childhood and has brought her full circle to a place where both her athletic and personal development have thrived.
Miller’s love for basketball started early, growing up in a family deeply involved in the sport.
“I started playing in 5th grade. My family has always been involved in basketball—my parents both played, and I grew up surrounded by the game,” Miller said. “Going to Highland, which is big on basketball, really shaped my journey. I learned early on that hard work, especially during the summer, would help us reach our goals. The dream was always to win a state championship, and that work ethic has stuck with me.”
Her time at Highland High School not only solidified her passion for the game but also paved the way for her future basketball career. Miller played Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball, where she had the opportunity to travel and meet many people along the way.
“The friendships I’ve made through basketball have been one of the highlights of my journey. It’s a game that has brought me so many amazing people and experiences.”

Before joining Ashland, Zoe attended Division I Bowling Green University, where she played for a time before realizing that it wasn’t the right fit for her.
“Originally, Ashland was at the top of my list,” Miller explains. “At Bowling Green, I just felt that I wasn’t where I was supposed to be. When I came to Ashland, I connected right away with Coach P. She was a huge influence on my decision to transfer. I knew Ashland was the place where I could grow both as a player and as a person.”
The tight-knit community at Ashland became one of the key reasons Miller chose to make the move. “The team here has such a sense of togetherness, and we all strive for the same goal: to win a national championship,” Miller said. “The success of the program, the atmosphere, the way the team and coaches support each other—it’s something I didn’t find anywhere else. Coming here has helped me grow every day, not just on the court but off the court as well.”
As a senior, Miller has embraced her leadership role, encouraged her teammates and used her experience to help guide the team. “Being a senior means so much to me. It’s my last year, and I’ve been here for a while now, so I take that responsibility seriously,” she says. “I’m here to motivate, encourage, and set an example for the younger players.”
Reflecting on her favorite memories from her time on the team, Miller’s thoughts turn to the bonds she’s built with her teammates. “The friendships I’ve made are what stand out the most. The girls are like my sisters. We get along so well, and that’s been such a special part of my experience,” she says. “And, of course, winning the national championship—that was an unforgettable experience. The energy, the atmosphere, the fans—it was something I’ll never forget.”
Despite the highs, there have been challenges along the way. Balancing basketball with academics and handling the pressures of a busy travel schedule can be overwhelming at times. But Zoe has learned how to navigate those tough days by keeping perspective. “Coach P always says, ‘Basketball is what you do, it’s not who you are,’” Miller explains. “That reminder helps me get through the hard days, especially after a tough loss or when I’m overwhelmed by schoolwork. Basketball is a huge part of my life, but it doesn’t define me. It’s something I get to do, and not everyone gets to play college basketball. That helps me stay grounded and motivated.”
Her journey—from a young girl surrounded by basketball to a senior leader with a national championship under her belt—shows just how far determination and love for the game can take you. And as she looks ahead to her future, Miller is poised to continue her path of growth, not just as an athlete but as an individual.
Whether on the court or in life, Zoe Miller’s resilience and dedication will inspire those around her for years to come.
