Ashland University offers many different types of yoga classes on campus that are open to all students. While yoga has been a consistent activity at AU for many years, more diverse classes have begun to appear.
A class held in the upper chapel on campus, Breathe Yoga, is taught by Jody Thomae and focuses on relaxing your mind and body while also concentrating on faith. This class is held on Mondays and is open to students and community members as well.
Another sort of class on campus is Fusion Yoga, which is held in the aerobics room of the Recreation Center on Tuesdays. Campus Yoga Instructor, Jennifer English, incorporates assorted styles of stretches and exercises in a safe and laid-back atmosphere.
“We really focus on mindfulness and breath work, really trying to put aside everything that is going on outside and focus on your body, and how your body is feeling. Using your breath to help you focus,” said English. She has been instructing at AU for two years after completing a 200-hour certification course, but first started out taking yoga classes here herself.
English also instructs classes offered at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Campus’ lawn, such as Midday Yoga. Here, students are welcome to take part in a nice stretch that focuses on the shoulders and back. Yoga mats and towels are also provided.
An upcoming event on campus, Goat Yoga, will take place on the quad on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The third annual event is open to all students, where there will be a chance to meet and interact with three goats while experiencing a yoga class hosted by Recreation and Wellness.
Director of Recreation and Wellness, Janel Molnar, said “It’s definitely something that is a memory maker for those who attend, and a highlight of their college experience.”
Students are highly encouraged to take part in the classes offered, as they provide many benefits to dealing with the stresses of college life. All classes are considered to be beginner friendly, and all students are welcome to attend.
